Final de Clausura 2013

El América y Cruz Azul had a great battle in the Final of the Clausura 2013. Only one could come out on top and that team was Club America. Their 11th title didn’t come easy especially after a 1-0 defeat in the away game. The home game was just a bad in the beginning when Jesus Molina was sent off with a red card for fouling Pablo Barrera . At minute 20 Teofilo Gutierrez when right around Aquivaldo Mosquera and took a shot that passed by Moises Munoz. The first half ended with America being down 2-0 with 45 minutes left to play with a man advantage for Cruz Azul. In the 2nd half America did control the game, but couldn’t make any of their shots. In the 85th minute many believed that America was out for the count and that Cruz Azul would finish as champions. With just over a minute left Aquivaldo Mosquera came in from the defense in order to head the ball into the net for the 1-1 in the Juego de Vuelta. The match was given 3 minutes of injury time and America knew that they needed one more goal if they wanted to keep their hopes alive. In the final minute America had a corner quick as their last hope and while the first attempt wasn’t good enough the second cross was pushed in just enough for Moises Munoz (America keeper) to get a diving header on the ball and bounce it off of Alejandro Castro of Cruz Azul for a last second goal. With a 2-2 global score America had created a miracle to force the 30 minute extra time. The extra time didn’t give a winner after Jose de Jesus Corona saved a shot by Chucho Benitez with the tips of his finger in the 100th minute to keep all hopes alive. At minute 104 Benitez was given a second chance that placed him in a one on one situation with Corona, but Benitez’s shot was stopped by Corona. The extra time ended with both teams still tied at 2 and the game was forced into penalty kicks. Cruz Azul was given the advantage because of Corona, but it was America that came out on top after Moises Munoz blocked a shot and another player from Cruz Azul shot the ball over the bar. Miguel Layun then came in as the America 4th shooter that gave America the win after he made the shot. The most watched final in Mexican soccer history allowed people to watch America end a 8 year trophy drought as they extended Cruz Azul’s 13 year drought for at least another tournament.
